Cynicism Is a Rest Stop

Somewhere along the line, despair became the badge of someone who really gets it.

If you see how dark it is and you're still okay...still moved by things, still capable of joy...you must not understand what you're looking at.

If it hasn't broken you...the logic goes, you haven't looked hard enough.

This gets it exactly backwards.

Anyone can collapse into cynicism right now. The information is everywhere, the betrayals are real, and the architecture of what's been done to the world is genuinely staggering. But despair requires no courage.

What actually takes discipline is staying in love with the world while knowing what you know. Not pretending the darkness isn't there...holding it alongside everything that isn't. The meal someone cooked for you. A dog that still treats every morning like a miracle. A child who hasn't learned yet to be embarrassed by being themselves.

Cynicism is a rest stop. The people who've set up camp there are not more awake. They've just stopped being moved.

The world doesn't need more people who understand how bad it is. It has plenty.

It needs people who can see all of it and still build something worth building.
It needs people who refused to let knowledge make them cold.
It needs people who haven't let what they know become who they are.
