Spirit and Soul
Archetypally, spirit is an ascending movement, while soul is descending.
Spirit is fire and air — it rises. We feel it when something opens us up, when everything suddenly coheres, when we touch something larger than ourselves. Even our language gives this away. We say "lift your spirits" when we want someone to feel better.
Soul is water and earth. The downward movement.
Into the body, into the weight of specific things...the particular relationship, the particular grief, the particular joy that can't be abstracted away.
Meaning lives in the texture of actual experience. Soul refers to multiplicity whereas spirit is singular. Soul wants you in the world — in the room you're in, in the conversation in front of you, in the life you're actually living.
Most of what we call inner work today emphasises the climb. The higher self, the higher vibration, the higher truth. There's nothing wrong with the climb. But a self that only knows how to rise is half a self. You can't integrate what you refuse to go down and meet.
Elevating the spirit is one movement. Letting your soul sink and greet the reality in front of you without a filter is the other — and evolving the self asks for both.
